We started with breakfast at the hotel and after checking out, we boarded the bus and headed to St. Peter's Basilica to start our day in Vatican City. After a short 20 minutes exploring St. Peter's Basilica, it was time to meet our local tour guide and tour the Vatican Museums that culminated in a tour of the Sistine Chapel and an opportunity to see Michelangelo's 12,000 sq. ft. of frescoes on the ceiling. It was truly breathtaking. After only seeing it in textbooks or in pictures my entire life, it was unbelievable and surreal to see it in-person with my own eyes. As we walked out of the Vatican, we had an opportunity to see a few members of the Swiss Guard in their festive, traditional jester-like uniforms.
After touring the Vatican Museums, we had a few hours of free time where some of us had lunch just off of St. Peter's square. The Margherita pizza and Pasta Carbonara was a hit!
After our time at the Vatican, we loaded onto our bus and headed to the Port of Naples where boarded our night ferry to Sicily and the city of Palermo.
